American chestnut trees were acquired by Monroe as seedlings from the Connecticut Agricultural Department Experiment Station (CADES). They were planted at the Edith Wheeler Memorial Library recently. The CADES has produced a blight-resistant strain of American chestnuts by backcrossing with Chinese trees over many decades. A grant from the Aquarion Water Company supported the Chestnut initiative.
