Stepney Green lighting ushers in the holidays

More than 300 luminaries greeted residents as they gathered to usher in the holiday season at the Stepney Green with the 15th annual lighting of the tree.

The crowd braved chilly temperatures to behold the lighting of the tree on Stepney Green on Saturday, Dec. 2.

The event, which also featured a special visit from Frosty the Snowman, was sponsored by Save Our Stepney (SOS) Task Force. Members of Save Our Stepney Task Force, the Stepney Volunteer Fire Co. and the Stepney Baptist Church helped make this event a reality for the community.

Residents were treated to holiday music performed by the Just Voices Singers under the direction of John Pelligrino, a reading of “Twas the Night Before Christmas,” and Monroe Boy Scout Troop 162 provided fresh-made donuts.

The Rev. Kevin Merritt of the Stepney Baptist Church invited all attendees to a carol sing in the Stepney Baptist Church immediately following the tree lighting. Don Casey, distinguished “red nose” Shriner clown, made balloon animals for the children, and Frosty the Snowman made a special appearance aboard a Stepney Volunteer Fire Co. truck to flip the tree light switch ushering in the holiday season.

Mina Gagnon and her husband, Jason, were excited to attend their second tree lighting on Stepney Green with their sons Cooper, 4, and Oliver, 2.

Tara Clemente treated her nieces Vera Savic, 4, and Amanda Savic, 3, to a fun-filled night at the Stepney Green tree lighting, which included meeting Frosty the Snowman.
