Masuk swim team: Freshmen spark easy victory

The Masuk High swim team earned nine first-place finishes Tuesday, capturing its fourth consecutive meet victory in the process.

Masuk dominated Bunnell-Stratford 82-66, and since Tom Harkins’ squad was heavily favored entering the meet, it allowed the longtime coach to juggle his lineup and put some swimmers in races they do not usually compete.

“Some of the guys get locked in n specific events, but I wanted to show them they can compete in other events and swim very well,” said Harkins, adding that this type of versatility makes Masuk a more dangerous team down the road.

Masuk has now evened its record at 4-4 entering its senior day clash Tuesday, Feb. 13, with New Milford.

Against Bunnell, Joey Nizzardo continued his strong freshman campaign, earning first-place finishes in the 200 free (1:57.91) and 100 fly (1:00.74). Fellow freshmen Mike Aiello and Matt Hull each earned first-place finishes — Aiello in the 200 IM (2:14.88) and 100 breast (1:12.16) and Hull in the 50 free (23.68) and 100 free (52.93).

Will Briand placed first in the 100 back (1:01.84) and second in the 50 free (23.81). James O’Shaughnessy finished first in the 500 free (6:12.20), while Ryan Cammarano placed second in both the 200 free (2:03.23) and 100 free (57.04).

Seniors Riley Bachard and DJ Wheeler also finished strong, with Bachard placing second in the 200 IM (2:24.27) and 100 free (58.09) and Wheeler, a senior captain, finishing third in the 100 fly (1:04.49).

The medley relay team of Briand, O’Shaughnessy, Bachard and Hull also placed first, finishing at 1:52.67.
