Robotics team shines in New Haven

Masuk High continued to dominate the state robotics scene, with two teams capturing tournament championships and a third earning the top design award in the University of New Haven competition.

Masuk robotics now also has eight of its teams — by far the most in the region — and all five middle school teams qualified for the Southern New England Championships.

“We had a great weekend,” said robotics team coach William McDonough, adding that the Masuk teams set a southern New England record for highest score of the season with 139 points in a single match.

“All of our teams are working really hard, and now the real tough part of our season begins,” said McDonough. “We need to get ready for our regional championship. These events have the best of the best, and our teams can qualify for the world championships at these events. We are hopeful to continue our streak of six years attending the world championships.”

At the University of New Haven, team VEXoskeleton (Zac Chin, Mitchell Hornak, Alex Moreno, Ryan Nicholas, Chloe Shawah, Liz Stozel, Peyton Sullivan, Alexis Woitowitz, Lizzie Winington, and Tyler Zalenski) and team 4478A (Katie Degorge, Braden Gentry, Bradley Grose, Michael Hayes, Kyle Immel, Alex Massaro, Rodolfo Mathews, Emily McMahon, Shane McPadden, Greg Miller, and Gabriel Rodrigues) were tournament champions.

Team Steve Harbot (Michelle Antony, Gillian Ciaccio, Margaret Didio, Jess Johnson, Madison O’Gull, and Jess Sokal) was named design award winner.

McDonough said most impressive to him at the University of New Haven competition was that team VEXoskeleton was the top-ranked robot for the entire day, and nine of the team’s 14 robots were ranked in the top 30 for the day.

McDonough said eight Masuk teams qualified for the Southern New England Championships as did five middle school squads.

Joining team VEXoskeleton, team Steve Harbot and team 4478A at the regionals will be fellow high school robot teams VEXED (Leo Beyers, Soorya Chenthilnathan, Michael Eisenman, Andrew Kanjo, Wen Jay Lim, James Stead, Ember Strickland, Karma Vijay, and Shuo Zheng), VEXplosion (Aarti Arasada, Deepti Gosukonda, Sophia Heinrich, Nicholas Palmer, and Dan Rodrigues), Pineapple VEXpress (DJ Foley, Trent Grabowski, Nolan McCarter, Tristan McDonough, Sean Murray, Aaron Roy, Praneet Saxena, Rohit Sureshanand, Krish Vijay, and Ryan Winkler), v.exe (Berra Barkana, Jake Bonczek, Nick deMayo, Nolan Downey, John Hansen, Colin Iken, Joey Lemm, Robert Potapov, Kyle Stofko, and Emily Zheng), and God Bot Z (Nate Bond, Josh Correll, Cole Dowling, Keegan McDonough, Matt Pearson, Sam Pearson, Matt Resnick, Andrew Resnick, and Jake Welch).
