Lorusso pitches Masuk past Pomperaug

Making his first start of the season, Nick Lorusso pitched a three-hitter as the Masuk baseball team defeated Pomperaug, 6-1, on Wednesday in Monroe.

Lorusso, a senior right-hander who will play at Villanova, held Pomperaug to one run while walking one batter and striking out six.

It was the first win of the season for Masuk, which is now 1-2 overall.

The Panthers scored single runs in the first four innings and then added two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Pomperaug (0-2) got its lone run in the top of the third.

Chris Nicolia had two of Masuk’s seven hits and scored two runs. One of Nicolia’s hits was a triple.

Riley McGuire added a double and an RBI for the Panthers, and Josh Wittenberger had a triple and an RBI and scored two runs.

Enzo Merlonghi contributed a hit and an RBI, while Jared Smith and Gianno Merlonghi each had one hit and scored a run.

Lorusso helped his own cause by driving in two runs for Masuk.
