Masuk boys lax team tops Foran

Led by freshman faceoff specialist John Bennett, the Masuk High boys lacrosse team took advantage of early possession domination and opened a commanding lead en route to a 12-5 non-conference victory over Foran on a damp Saturday morning in Monroe.

The Panthers, coming off a 13-8 Senior Night win over Brookfield last Thursday, improved their overall record to 10-5. Foran, out of the Southern Connecticut Conference, dropped to 6-8.

Stephen Murphy led Masuk with five goals and a pair of assists.

Mickey Zuk added two goals and two assists for the Panthers, and Ryan Shaw and David Allan each scored twice and had an assist.

Jordan Beckett added a goal, while Quinn Braddick handed out three assists.

Masuk starting goaltender Chris Tilotson stopped eight shots, and back-up TJ Scalia made one save in the fourth quarter.

The Panthers led 6-1 late in the second quarter and carried a 7-3 lead into halftime, with Murphy scoring four of the goals. Masuk netted the first three goals of the third quarter and led 10-4 going into the fourth.

Beckett and Deric De Angelis both scooped up three ground balls for the Panthers.

Bennett won eight of 12 draws in the opening half to help Masuk put pressure on the Lions from the start.

“It was nice to get the ball and play a little offense. We still didn’t capitalize on all of our opportunities, which is what I would like to see, but we’re playing pretty good lacrosse right now,” said Masuk coach Terry Stroz.

Solid defense led to offense for the Panthers. Max Mirizio, Tom Insalaco and Wyatt Dzilinski were strong in the back to help create turnovers.

“We played well. I think our effort’s always good. If they’re giving us a good effort I think we stand a chance against a lot of teams,” said Stroz.
