URGENT: No closure: Weather cancels Rt. 25 work

For the second consecutive weekend, the threat of torrential downpours has forced the state Department of Transportation (DOT) to cancel road work along Route 25 — which was requiring the road’s closure for the entire weekend.

The road was to be closed beginning tonight, Friday, Aug. 10, at 8 p.m., and lasting through 6 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 13. The closure was to be from Brook Street to Knowlwood Avenue so workers can replace two culverts and raise the roadway along that stretch. The work zone was to extend through the shopping plaza south of Knowlwood Avenue, with alternating traffic on Route 25.

State DOT officials stated the new dates for the road closure is beginning 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, through 6 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 20.

The road closure would force traffic to be detoured onto Pepper Street and Old Newtown Road. Truck traffic would not be permitted on local roads and instead would be detoured to routes 111 and 34. When it is finally about to occur, this closure will be the first of three such weekend closures this year. Those additional dates have not been finalized.

First Selectman Ken Kellogg said that while the closure is necessary, access to all businesses in that area will remain available during the road closure.
