Library Lines: SAT practice, art for kids, adults on tap

The following programs are being held at the Edith Wheeler Memorial Library. The library hours are Monday and Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The library will remain closed on Sundays during the summer, reopening on Sundays in the fall.

Art for adults

Art for Adults: Lucky Number will have two sessions — Monday, Sept. 17, or Tuesday, Sept. 25 — each from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Kathy Vincent of ArtSmart! Studio will host the evening of acrylic painting inspired by the work of American pop artist Jasper Johns. Registration is required and limited to 16 people. Please register for one class only.

Business gathering set

Business strategist and award-winning author Chris Salem will host a program, “Master Your Inner Champion for Sustainable Success” on Monday, Sept. 17, at the library’s monthly Business Lunch ‘n Learn session. The program will run from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. Doors open at noon.

Kids get creative

A “Let’s Make Animation” program for kids grades 3 to 6 will be held Wednesday, Sept. 19, from 11 a.m. to noon. Kids can learn about the history of animation and to create a flip book, zoetrope strips and thaumatrope cards. Registration is required.

Nachos and a movie for teens

Teens in seventh to 12th grade can enjoy dinner and a movie on Friday, Sept. 21, beginning at 6 p.m. Dinner will feature nachos, while the movie is Avengers: Infinity War. Registration is required and limited to 20 people.

SAT practice test

A free SAT practice test will be held Saturday, Sept. 22, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for current high school sophomores, juniors and seniors. After the test, participants will receive an extensive score report as well as a personalized consultation with a Princeton Review advisor. Bring #2 pencils, a calculator and a water bottle, if you need one. A light snack will be provided. Registration is required and is limited to 60 people. Casaretti plays Benedict Arnold

Vic Casaretti, known for his portrayals of James Monroe, PT Barnum, and Davy Crockett, will bring Benedict Arnold, “Washington’s Fighting General,” to life on Monday, Sept. 24, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Casaretti will tell Arnold’s story, including what caused him to betray the Revolutionary cause. Registration is required.

Adult writers’ workshop set

The next adult writers’ workshop will be Tuesday, Sept. 25, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. All levels of writers are welcome. No registration is necessary.

Meet your career goals

Two Monroe career experts will host Discovering Your Perfect Career on Tuesday, Sept. 25, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Career counselor Jill Griffin and Monroe Staffing senior account manager Jackie Fedor will share tips on how to successfully plan and execute a positive career search. Registration is required and limited to 12 people.

Learn some SAT tips

Learn strategies for taking the math portion of the SAT at a program on Thursday, Sept. 27, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. SAT tutor Mike Rinn will host the program. Registration is required and limited to 20. The library closes at 5 p.m. on Thursdays, so all children must be picked up promptly at the back entrance of the building.

Magic: The Gathering

Kids in grades 7 to 12 can participate in an afternoon of Magic:The Gathering, a card game based on strategy with spells, magic and monsters, on Friday, Sept. 28, from 4 to 5 p.m. Refreshments will be served, and registration is required.

Book discussion set

This month’s book discussion will focus on “The Forgiven” by Lawrence Osborne. The talk will be Tuesday, Oct. 2, from 6:45 to 7:45 in the Rotary Room. Copies of books are available for check out at the front desk. No registration is required.
