Blazin’ Pumpkins to replace the Spirits of Stepney tour

The Save Our Stepney Task Force (SOS) has cancelled the Spirits of Stepney Graveside Lantern Cemetery tour, and in its place will host the first Blazin’ Pumpkins illumination on Friday, Oct. 26, and Sunday, Oct. 28. Both events will run from at 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on the Stepney Green.

At the Blazin’ Pumpkins events, attendees will be treated to hot cider, apples, and donuts with small pumpkins available for children to decorate and take home. There will be opportunities to take pictures with the “Great Pumpkin,” so come dressed in a favorite Halloween costume.

Carved pumpkins of all sizes and expressions will create a blazin’ ring of illumination around the gazebo on the Stepney Green, located at the intersection of Routes 25 and 59. The Blazin’ Pumpkins will be illuminated beginning Saturday, Oct. 20, and be extinguished after Halloween. Members of the Save Our Stepney Task Force will build the core illumination, and members of the community are invited to join in by bringing a carved pumpkin to insure a glowing fun time. Carved pumpkins may be dropped off at 51 Hattertown Road or to the Green on the event dates.

The Stepney Green has a long history dating back to the early 1700s when it was used for militia drills. In 1817, it was officially purchased for $140 to serve as a place of parade for the Birdsey’s Plain Rifle Co. Today, the green serves as a meeting place for, community picnics, holiday tree lightings and other community events.

The event is free with parking provided behind the Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church.
